Athletics Club Stalwart Steps Down

It’s all change at Long Wittenham Athletics Club.  Long serving president Bill Symonds has stepped down after fifteen years in the role and has been replaced by former chairman Derek Meadham.  His position has been taken over by Ian Burton.  Ron Carter continues as secretary and Steve Bolton remains social secretary.

Mr Symonds becomes a Life Vice President and at the club’s recent annual meeting was thanked for his hard work and commitment to the club.  He has been associated with it since moving to the village more than forty years ago.  Mr Symonds is the club’s second Life Vice President.  The first was the late Ray Woodage.

Speaking at the club’s annual dinner held in a marquee in Bodkin’s Field, Mr Symonds said that after so many years it was time for him to step aside to make way for the younger generation to take the club forward.

He said: “It is with great sadness that I have decided to step down as president.  Thank you for all the lovely memories I take with me.  It is my fervent wish that the club continues to survive and prosper.  A history of one hundred and fifteen years is a wonderful achievement for a small village and long may it continue.”
