Chris King 1936-2021

A popular coach driver in Long Wittenham, Chris (Charles) King, who took villagers on coach trips to seaside resorts around the country and to local markets has died.  He was eighty-five.

Chris was born in West Hendred.  The family lived on the Lockinge Estate working as carters and shepherds.  Chris and his parents, Punch and Daisy Bell, moved to Long Wittenham in the early 1950s.

Chris did his national service in the Parachute Regiment.  Later, he worked as a coach driver.  He was part of the Military Vehicle Trust and enjoyed restoring and touring around the country and Europe in army vehicles with his friends and comrades.  He was also popular in Long Wittenham, helping villagers maintain their gardens.

Chris spent his final years living in Drayton with his companion Vera.  He will be sadly missed by his children Martin, Beverley, John and Trudy, and his seven grandchildren.  Only Martin lives locally, in Brightwell-cum-Sotwell.

The funeral service will be held on 10th August at 3pm at South Oxfordshire Crematorium in Wantage Road, Garford.  Afterwards, there will be a final farewell to Chris at The Plough Inn, Long Wittenham, from 4pm.

Very sad to hear. He was a very kind man & good friends with Norman Heath (also no longer with us). Charlie lived in the cottages that were here before our houses were built on Didcot Road (now No’s 23 & 24). He showed me a picture of the original cottages & I would love a copy if any family members come across it. Thank you & RIP Charlie.
