Women’s Institute

All kinds of opportunities for all kinds of women because we are more fizz than jam!

These are some of the things we get up to: Talks and demonstrations, Outings and Workshops, Theatre trips, Charitable campaigns, Quizzes.

We would love to meet you.  Come along …… bring a friend if you like.  There is something here for everyone.  We meet at Long Wittenham village hall on the second Tuesday of the month from 7.30pm to 9pm.  There is a small cost of £5 per session for non-members.

Programme 2022-2023

Tuesday 11th October – Olive Gibbs Oxford Politician and Peace campaigner
Liz Woolley is a local historian specialising in aspects of the history of Oxford and Oxfordshire.  She is particularly interested in the history of the city’s “town” – as opposed to “gown” – and in the everyday lives of rural people across the county, chiefly during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.  Liz Woolley is going to give a talk on Olive Gibbs.  Olive was very prominent in local politics, severing as both Lord Mayor on Oxford and chair of Oxford county council.  She also chaired the campaign for nuclear disarmament.  Whatever your politics come and find out more about this ground breaking female politician.

Tuesday 8th November – Cheese and Wine tasting
Catherine Nicholson has experience of the cheese industry and will also be demonstrating how to make a simple soft cheese. Come and find out a bit more about cheeses and enjoy wines that accompany them.

Saturday 12th November – Macramé workshop
This is a day time workshop aimed at compete novices.  You will make your own plant pot holder.  This could be your first step in a fascinating hobby.

Tuesday 13th December – Seasonal get together
Come and enjoy Mulled wine and mince pies with entertainment supplied by the members.  This promises to be great fun.

Tuesday 10th January 2023 – Discuss WI Campaigns
We will be discussing a ranch of charitable campaigns which the National Wl will support in the coming year.  Come and find out which campaigns the WI get involved in.

Tuesday 14th February – Fashion Show
Milan Fashion show comes to Long Wittenham.  Details to follow nearer the time

Saturday 4th March – Special Event Treasures from the Queen’s Collection
The speaker is Dr Lizzy Rowe followed by a cream tea.

Tuesday 14th March – AGM and Beetle Drive
Come and see what we got up to during this WI year.  Followed by a Beetle Drive which is always fun.

Tuesday 11th April – At Home with the Queen of Crime
Judy Dewey is a well-known local historian and author, and curator of Wallingford Museum, and an authority on the life and times of Agatha Christie.
