Councillors Visit Vanderbilt Site

Parish councillors were recently given a tour of the Vanderbilt housing development.  They were shown around the site by Head of Construction, Peter Hutson and Site Manager, Jason King.

The company has been on site for two months and the new entrance on Didcot Road will soon replace the temporary access off Fieldside.  Mr Hutson said good progress was being made and the opening of the first show house was expected in November or early December.

The overhead power cable that runs across the site is being re-located underground.  Residents who may be affected have been advised by Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks.  Work should be completed by Friday 7th May.

Vanderbilt has agreed to donate approx 200 tonnes of soil for the construction of the Pump Track at Acklings, and to provide, at no cost, the “type1 “ gravel needed for the surface of the track.

Mr Hutson reported that significant archaeological artefacts were discovered on the land including an Anglo-Saxon house, animal stockade and skeletons thought to be more than a 1,000 years old.  A ditch estimated to be 2,500 years old was also unearthed.

A full report and photographic record of the findings will be compiled by Oxfordshire County Council’s museum service and the report will be published for the public.  Last year it was planned to hold an exhibition of archaeological finds at the school but the pandemic intervened.  It is hoped to stage an exhibition next year.
