Death of Former Councillor

Former Long Wittenham Parish Councillor Andy Humphreys has died at the age of 57.  Mr Humphreys was born in the village and spent a large part of his life in the community.  He moved to Didcot last year to care for his 91-year-old mother Margaret.

Mr Humphreys was a member of the parish council for several years in the late 1990s to early 2002 and worked for South Oxfordshire District Council’s maintenance department before setting up his own building maintenance business.

He lived for many years in Saxons Heath with his former wife Samantha and they had three children, Charlotte, Daniel and Adrienne.  Mr Humphreys had two children from a previous marriage, Vincent and Suzanne.

He is survived by Samantha, five children, his mother Margaret, brother Jim from Abingdon and sisters Linda from Long Wittenham, Julie from Abingdon and Diana who lives in Derby.

His sister Linda Aldridge said: “Andy’s death is a great loss to his family and he’ll be greatly missed.  Nothing was too much trouble for Andy who would give a hand to anyone who needed help.”

During his time on Long Wittenham Parish Council Mr Humphreys worked alongside his wife Samantha who was the clerk to the council and later became the council’s financial officer.  When he and his family lived in the village Mr Humphreys was involved in many community fund-raising events with the Wittenhams’ Playground Association.  He was instrumental in staging the first bonfire and fireworks night in the village.

The funeral service is on 7th March at 2.30pm in St Mary’s Church, Long Wittenham, followed by interment in the church yard.
