Good Neighbours Birthday Bash

Long Wittenham Good Neighbours Group (GNG) celebrated its fourth birthday in early May with a special tea at the Dorchester Abbey tea rooms followed by a tour of the museum and abbey.

Steve Marsh, one of the group’s long-serving supporters who volunteers at the abbey, arranged the birthday celebration and the tea room laid on cream scones and homemade cakes.

The group, which is sponsored by the parish council, meets on the first Thursday of each month and has a regular core membership of twenty five members.  It provides a meeting place for elderly, lonely people and is a valuable asset for the community.

It has an “open door” policy and draws in people not only from Long Wittenham but the neighbouring communities of Little Wittenham, Clifton Hampden and Appleford.

Its chairman and founder Steve Brown say that it provides an important meeting place for villagers many of whom look forward to a monthly social gathering where they can get help and support if needed.

Mr Brown said: “The GNG is very grateful to the parish council for its continued financial support.  Our main expenses are the rent of the village hall, grocery items for afternoon teas and fees or donations to guest speakers.”

Dear Mandy Thank you for your kind comments.

GNG is open to any Long and Little Wittenham residents and I would encourage anyone to drop by on the afternoon of the first Thursday every month for a cup of tea and some homemade cakes. We always have a sociable chat and sometimes have interesting speakers or visits from the school.

I circulate a gentle reminder every month (in case we are going on an outing for example) and if anyone would like to send me their email I will add you to my list.

    Best wishes Steve.
