HISTORICAL & CULTURAL
Long Wittenham Local History Group
The group, formed in 1984, researches, collects, studies and shares through publications and exhibitions, all aspects of the local and family history of the parish and local area of Long Wittenham. Members meet usually on the third Monday of each month for talks, research meetings or social gatherings. The Annual meeting, held in September, is open to everyone living in the village or with an interest in its history and heritage. The group has a good collection of photographs and has transcribed most of the available parish registers. It has published a booklet ‘The Parish of Long Wittenham 1800-1920’ (currently out of print) and a series of journals, ‘The Chronicle’, with articles on the shops, church, local characters, farming, buildings , the school and village organisations. For more information about the group, please contact the secretary, Janet Haylett on 407382 or email familyhaylett[at]yahoo.com

Long Wittenham Twinning Association
If you’ve read the signs welcoming you to Long Wittenham, then you will be aware that Long Wittenham is twinned
with the Normandy village of Thaon. Located just a 30 minute drive from the ferry port of Caen, the Normandy
beaches and the historic town of Bayeux are nearby. The Twinning Association promote Anglo-French relations
based on visits to families and they also offer an annual bursary to students studying French. The Association has an
active and enjoyable social programme, which is the sole source of funding for entertaining our French guests on
their visits. To find out more or to get involved, please contact the Chairman, Robin Sawers on 407515 or email here. Robin.sawers[at]dial.pipex.com - replace [at] with @
Pendon Museum
The famous Pendon is a museum that portrays the rural landscape and transport of the 1920’s and 1930’s, particularly in the Vale of the White Horse, using miniatures. Realistically modelled landscapes of country cottages, farms, fields and lanes recall the peaceful country ways of that period. Cavalcades of trains, accurately represented, provide a fascinating record of the railways of the time. Pendon is being created entirely by volunteer modellers who work to the most exacting standards. The Vale Scene model is still under construction, but already you can see a substantial part of the village of Pendon Parva built around an ancient hill-fort, the agricultural landscape surrounding the village, and the derelict Wiltshire and Berkshire canal. |

And of course there is the Great Western Railway main line sweeping from the junction station at Pendon Parva through the fields on its way from London to West Country and the Midlands. Pendon is enjoyed by people of all generations and with many different interests. You can watch a fascinating collection of model trains go by on the Dartmoor Scene, or spend hours taking in the detail of the model village in the Vale Scene. Our volunteers are there to make your visit as enjoyable and informative as possible, and will be only too happy to tell you more about anything you see at the Museum.
Opening Times
The Pendon Museum is open Every Saturday and Sunday from 2pm - 5-30pm (unless stated otherwise) until Sunday December 7th 2008. The museum is also open on bank holidays, and on specified Wednesdays during school holidays. For more information on opening times, admission prices and what’s on offer at the museum please go to the Pendon Museum website. |
