There has been a warm welcome to the news that £218m of funding has finally been agreed for infrastructure projects in the Didcot Garden Town area. The government awarded the Housing Infrastructure Funding to support the significant growth in housing in the area.
Projects receiving a share of the funding include a new Didcot to Culham link road and bridge over the Thames between the A4130 and A415, running west of the Didcot to Oxford railway.
This scheme has the support of the Parish Council because it should siphon-off some of the traffic from the new Ladygrove development and ease traffic volumes through the village.
Also on the list is a new bypass for Clifton Hampden, widening of the Didcot to A34 road at Milton, amd a new ‘science’ bridge over the A4130 and railway and into the old Didcot coal-fired power station site.
The leader of South Oxfordshire District Council (SODC), Sue Cooper, said: “We’ve always said that Didcot and the surrounding areas are in great need of increased infrastructure based on the number of new homes already built in the town over the past decade. It’s good to see the money has been agreed at last.”
“We will need an even greater focus on sustainable transport in the long term, so I’m pleased that walking and cycling routes are included in these projects. We’ll be working positively with our partner councils to continue that work and it would be good to see some delivery of improved pedestrian and cycle routes soon.”
