New Parish Councillor

The village has a new parish councillor.  Steve Bolton, who lives in Westfield Road, was co-opted on to the parish council at last night’s meeting.

Cllr Bolton, who is retired, worked for many years at the Cowley car plant on Rolls Royce and Mini production.  He is married with two daughters.  He moved to the village thirty-six years ago from Appleford.

He has been involved in local football for more than forty-five years and is the treasurer and groundsman for Long Wittenham Athletics Club.  He lists his other interests as real ale and clay pigeon shooting.  Now that he is retired, he says he hopes to be able to devote more time to village issues and is looking forward to his new role on the council.

His recruitment has been welcomed by the chairman of the parish council, Gordon Rogers, who said: “I am sure Steve will prove a valuable addition.  He has a knowledge and feel for local issues through his contacts at the football club.  We have one more vacancy on the council and I hope someone will come forward to help us in the task of shaping the way ahead for the village”.

I live opposite the new building site in Didcot Road and I am dismayed to see they are taking out the hedge during the nesting season.Have they got permission to do this? Can the parish council delay the removal of the hedging until the nesting season is over. Our poor birds are struggling enough without their nests being destroyed in the name of progress.

The parish council has checked with Vanderbilt. Most of the hedge was taken out last year. The only section of hedgerow to removed recently was a narrow section to accommodate a new section for sewer work.
