If you’ve read the signs welcoming you to Long Wittenham, then you will be aware that Long Wittenham is twinned with the Normandy village of Thaon. Located just a 30 minute drive from the ferry port of Caen, the Normandy beaches (with a wide range of WW2 sites) and the historic town of Bayeux are nearby. The Twinning Association promotes Anglo-French relations based on visits to families.
Every two years, a group of individuals, couples and families from Long Wittenham visit Thaon for a weekend, and stay with French families. We are extremely well taken care of and our hosts organise a mixture of fun, cultural and food/drink based events for us. In between our visits, a group from Thaon visit our village.
French language skills are not a barrier – everyone joins in and has a great time!
The Twinning Association also has an active and enjoyable social programme, which helps to provide funding for entertaining our French guests on their visits.
The Association also awards an occasional £100 bursary to anyone from our local area who intends to make a visit to France to study or learn French. Successful applicants in the past have been young students on exchanges, cultural tours, or undergoing summer school lectures.
