Village Big Lunch

Planning is underway for a Long Wittenham “Big Lunch” to celebrate the community and the 100th birthday of the Womens’ Institute in Oxfordshire.  The Wittenham branch of the WI was formed 70 years ago.

On Monday 26th November at 7.30pm WI members, in conjunction with the Athletics Club, will be meeting at the clubhouse to formulate plans for the event which is scheduled to take place on Sunday 30th June next year on Bodkin’s Field.  All villagers will be invited to join in the celebrations.

Wittenham WI president Jane May said: “There is plenty to celebrate: simplicity and community building will be the order of the day, and focus on including as many sections of our community as possible in support of the WI`s commitment to reduce isolation and loneliness, which are possible, even in our community.”

All village organisations are invited to take part in The Big Lunch which will be in the form of a simple picnic-style lunch, maybe with a brass band and an Athletics Club versus Village football match to follow.  Games for children are also on the agenda.

Mrs May added: “Many other things are possible and it’s an ideal opportunity for village groups to publicise their activities.  We would like representatives of village groups to come along on 26th November and bring along just one idea about what the group could supply or contribute to the day, whether practical or entertainment-related.  We would especially like some games for the children.”

The organisers would like to hear from interested parties by Tuesday 6th November.  Please contact WI secretary Ann Tomline on 01865 407961, or email atsandalwood@hotmail.co.uk
