Views Sought On Garden Town Project

Long Wittenham and Clifton Hampden form part of the newly created Garden Town status project for Didcot which could yield road and transport improvements along with new homes and job opportunities over the next 15 years.

Didcot was awarded Garden Town status by the government last year following a successful bid by South Oxfordshire and the Vale of White Horse District Councils. Oxfordshire County Council and the Oxfordshire Local Enterprise Partnership were also involved in the bid.

Bus Service Plan Frustrated

Hopes of reviving a bus service in Long Wittenham have been dashed.  The Parish Council was considering using the Oxfordshire Comet Bus to provide a service to Didcot.  Mini-buses used by the county council to ferry children to special schools and elderly people to day centres in the county have been made available to individuals and groups between 10.30am and 2.30pm.

Parish councillors Gordon Rogers and Martin Elliff delivered letters to every household in the village asking who would use the service but only fifteen people responded.  Four said they would not use it leaving eleven people interested.  Following further visits, telephone calls and emails only four people said the service would be useful so the council has Continue reading →

Didcot Garden Town

Didcot has been chosen by the government to be a new Garden Town.  What does this mean for the town and neighbouring communities?  What does it mean for you?  Will it impact on Long Wittenham?

South Oxfordshire District Council says the project is a unique opportunity to make Didcot a more green and pleasant place in which to live and work.  In addition to supporting 20,000 new jobs and 15,000 new homes the district council will be exploring how the town can be improved to benefit everyone.

Long Wittenham Poetry Club

A Poetry Club has been formed in Long Wittenham. It meets monthly at The Plough pub and the next meeting is on 15th November starting at 8pm. The first gathering was in October when members read their own poems which reflected autumn. Poems by Walt Whitman, R. S Thomas, and Seamus Heaney featured during the evening. After each poem had been read there was a discussion and questions aimed at trying to understand the author’s intent.

Organiser David Corney said the group looked forward to meeting new members for an “interesting and thought provoking” evening of poetry. More details available from Mr Corney at david.r.corney@gmail.com

Saxon’s Heath Footway Resurfacing Works

Oxfordshire County Council will be carrying out footway resurfacing works at Saxon’s Heath, Long Wittenham starting within the week commencing 7th November 2016 for a duration of approximately 15 working days.

The works will be carried under temporary priority traffic management if necessary. Pedestrians will be encouraged to use the opposite footway adjacent to the works.

Clifton Hampden Bridge Closure

Please note that Clifton Hampden Bridge will be closed for three days from Monday 24th October 2016 to Wednesday 26th October 2016 between the hours of 07:00 and 17:00 owing to the need for urgent repairs.

Earth Trust Plans

Plans for a £5m expansion of the Earth Trust’s facilities at Hill Farm at Little Wittenham have received a positive response from Long Wittenham Parish Council even though the development could generate an extra 1,000 vehicles a week passing through the village. But residents of Sires Hill have objected to South Oxfordshire District Council.

At the parish council’s October meeting the chief executive of the Earth Trust Jayne Manley said the Wittenham Clumps and surrounding area attracted 150,000 visitors a year and many came from within 20 to 30 miles. Quarry Set Back

There’s been a set-back in the fight to stop a quarry from being developed on green belt land near Clifton Hampden. An inspector examining Oxfordshire County Council’s minerals and waste strategy for the next ten years has concluded that the overall target for minerals should not be reduced.

The opposition group Bachport – Burcot and Clifton Hampden for the Protection of the River Thames – has been fighting plans by Hills Quarry Products to extract sand and gravel from what’s been called Fullamoor quarry. At the public examination Oxage – Oxfordshire Against Gravel Extraction – spoke out against the county council’s plan to increase the amount of aggregates extracted from sites in the county.
