Ringing practices at Long Wittenham take place at St Mary’s from 7.30-8.30pm on Monday evenings except for the fifth Monday in a month when we practice at Little Wittenham. The practices are usually light-hearted ending in a social visit to the local pub, the Plough, although this is not mandatory. Sometimes there are bell ringing tours arranged or we are invited to ring at other towers. These visits provide a good chance to learn about local church history as well as meeting other ringers.
We would like to recruit local ringers as many of our present ringers come from other towers. A good bell ringer could be young or old, male or female because strength is unimportant as is musical ability. Ringing is well within the capabilities of most people. The initial teaching takes several weeks, after which a learner can begin to ring with the rest of the band.
If you would like to learn to ring just come along on a Monday evening or ring/E-mail Peter Collinson for more details.
