Sharon Murphy writes …
Many, many years ago a tradition started here in the village: Maypole Dancing. It was introduced by Marjorie Edwards who undertook the teaching of this village tradition.
After her passing, The Girls Friendly Society (GFS) took it on, run by Joy Whitehead and Linda O’Driscol. Joy then moved to Surrey and the GFS stopped, but Joy wanted the May Dancing to carry on came knocking at my door! So myself and a few mums carried on the yearly event until our children left the Village school. We passed it on to more mums but sadly it wound down and then stopped as Covid19 hit.
So finally we have decided to restart this village tradition of over 150 years!
Please bring your children along on the dates shown on the flyer below and come along to watch on Friday 1st May at 6pm to support the dancers, and this age old tradition. Long Wittenham Athletic Club will be hosting the event, the bar will be open and weather permitting, food will be available to purchase. Thank you in advance from the organisers:
Sharon Murphy, Mo Jackson, Suzanne Challis and Alison Thomas.
Offers of help would be greatly appreciated. And if anyone knows what happened to the music on CD that was last used for the dancing, please let me know. Email themurphys666@gmail.com.
