Residents can now discover Wittenham Clumps in new ways with four waymarked walking trails inviting people to explore one of Oxfordshire’s best-loved landscapes.
Created by Earth Trust, the routes range from a short, gentle circuit suitable for families and first-time visitors, to a longer trail through grassland, woodland and nature-friendly farmland. Clear waymarking and mapped routes make it easy to choose a walk that suits the time, energy and interests of everyone.
There are four routes for different kinds of adventure:
- Farm Nature Trail 1.5 km (0.9 miles), around 30 minutes: a short, mostly flat circular walk from the Visitor Centre through pasture, orchards, wildflower meadow and fields where food production and wildlife thrive side by side.
- Clumps Heritage Trail 1.5 km (0.9 miles), around 40 minutes: a more energetic option with a steep, rewarding climb to Round Hill, panoramic views across the Thames and the ancient ramparts of the Iron Age hillfort at Castle Hill.
- College Farm Trail 2.8 km (1.7 miles), around 50 minutes: a varied circular route from Neptune Wood car park through woodland, flower-rich meadows and farmland.
- Landscape Discovery Trail 5.7km (3.5 miles), around 1hr 45 minutes: the longest and most immersive route, weaving together grassland, woodland, Thames views and nature-friendly farming fields before returning to the Visitor Centre.
Free route maps are available at Earth Trust’s new pop-up café at the Visitor Centre which is open seven days a week, 9am to 3pm.
