Bell Ringers Wanted

The Bell Ringers of Long and Little Wittenham would like to recruit new ringers from the villages.  A good bell ringer can be young or old, male or female, because strength is unimportant as is musical ability.  Ringing is well within the capabilities of most people.  The initial teaching takes several weeks, after which a learner can begin to ring with the rest of the band.

Ringing practices take place at St Mary’s, Long Wittenham from 7.30-8.30pm on Monday evenings except for the fifth Monday in a month when the practice is at St Peters, Little Wittenham.  The practices are usually light-hearted ending in a visit to the local pub, although this is not mandatory.

For more details and contact information see the Bell Ringers page.

Kler Planning Application – Comments Deadline

The deadline for responses to the latest set of amendments to Kler’s planning application for up to 36 houses at the corner of Fieldside and the Didcot Road is Thursday 19th January.  You may make as many comments as you wish, so even if you have commented before, please do so again as this will add weight when it goes before the planning committee.

A reminder of the key concerns:

  • Conflict with our Neighbourhood Plan.  In planning terms, the village is defined as unsustainable.  If Kler’s plan is approved it will mean a greater increase in housing stock than is required by SODC’s draft local plan but without providing any community facilities that would help address the sustainability issues.
  • Damaging impact on the conservation area.
  • Impact on ecology. The plan has houses close to an environmentally important site.
  • Traffic volume and safety.

Neighbourhood Plan Update

Since the Pre-Submission Consultation Documents were published in July last year, the NP Steering Committee has received a lot of feedback from both residents and statutory consultees.  In particular feedback was received from South Oxfordshire District Council (SODC) suggesting that some of the policies were not robust and could be open to challenge.  The plan has been amended to reflect this feedback.

Peter Rose, the Chairman of the Steering Committee gives a detailed update on the process and what will happen next here.

The amended plan and accompanying documents can be viewed here.
