South Oxfordshire tops the recycling tables again

South Oxfordshire District Council has been named the best recycler in DEFRA’s annual recycling league tables for 2015/16 (66.6% recycling rate), with neighbouring Vale of White Horse District Council in fourth place (64.8% recycling rate).

It’s the third year in a row that South Oxfordshire has topped the table, although the Vale has dropped from second last year to fourth. This is in part due to big improvements from other councils – the recycling rates from East Riding of Yorkshire, which is in second place, improved by over eight per cent.

Free Car Parking

South Oxfordshire District Council is providing free parking on various days in the run up to Christmas.  It is free in district council car parks all day on the following days during December:

Abingdon: Saturdays – 17th, 24th
Didcot: Tuesdays – 13th and 20th
Faringdon: Saturday 17th
Goring: Saturdays – 17th and 24th
Henley: Tuesday 20th
Thame: Saturdays – 17th and 24th
Wantage: Fridays – 16th and 23rd
Wallingford: Thursdays – 15th and 22nd

Sign Up for SODC Newsletter

Residents are encouraged to sign up for “South News”, South Oxfordshire District Council’s newsletter which is published every two months.

Didcot Garden Town – Have Your Say

Didcot Garden Town is a major part of the plan for development in the District.  South Oxfordshire District Council is keen to speak to as many people as possible and a new interactive website has been launched at www.didcotgardentown.co.uk.  It allows people to pin their ideas, comments and suggestions for Didcot to a map of the town, as well as to see what other people are commenting on.  Anyone living in Didcot and surrounding villages is urged to have their say.

Anti Quarry Photo Competition

Bachport – the group opposed to plans for a huge quarry at Clifton Hampden – is launching a photography competition. Called #sorrybutNOquarry the competition is open to everyone and will give the public the opportunity to express artistically how they feel about the prospect of a gravel pit and concrete plant being built on the Oxfordshire Green Belt, overlooking the river Thames and the Thames path.

Kler Planning Application – Update

Many of you have made a note of the Planning Committee meeting dates in order that you can attend and protest against this application.

It was announced yesterday (22nd November) that it will not be dealt with this year.

This is of course good news as it allows the Neighbourhood Plan team more time to finish the work of revising the Plan.

Villagers Urged to Fight Housing Plans

Long Wittenham residents are being urged to step up the fight against plans to build 36 homes off Fieldside on the site of the old Challis Farm. In December or January South Oxfordshire District Council’s planning committee is expected to discuss the proposals by development promoter Kler.

The parish council says it conflicts with its proposed Neighbourhood Plan because it does not provide the community facilities outlined in the NP – a new school, village hall and shop – which are necessary if the village is to improve community facilities for all age groups.

Bonfire Boost For Charities

Six organisations shared in the £1,200 profit made from the annual Long Wittenham bonfire and fireworks night on 5th November.

The event – organised by the parish council and supported by Wittenham Warriors – attracted more than 400 people to Ward’s Field.

The biggest recipient was the Earth Trust which received £300. The Sylva Foundation, St Mary’s church, the Stroke Association and the Churchill hospital League of Friends each received £200. The Pendon  Museum received £100.
