Footie on the Green

Parents living in Saxons Heath are being urged to encourage their children to use the new playing field at Acklings or Bodkins to play football and ball games and not gather on the Green. It follows a letter from a resident concerned about the risk to children chasing balls in the road and the safety of drivers. The council is seeking advice from the county council about the possibility of erecting “Not suitable for ball games”

signs. But signs are difficult to enforce and parents are urged to encourage their children to avoid the Green and play ball games at the recognised play areas, Acklings and Bodkins.

Spiced up Vine

The Vine&Spice pub-restaurant plans to build a wood and glass flat roof extension, described as a “high quality, sympathetic contemporary structure ” providing 32 seats for diners.

The Vine withdrew a previous application following objections but has submitted a new plan which it believes meets previous concerns. The revised plan is supported by the parish council but has to win approval from South Oxfordshire District Council.

In the application the Vine’s architects say the proposed structure is free-standing and will not detract from the existing historic building.

Their report adds: “When inside the extension the large glass screens next to the existing building will create a frame to view and appreciate the fabric of the listed Grade two architecture.”

To minimise impact of the development on the High Street the proposed three-metre high building has been contained and would not be visible from the roadside.

The existing restaurant has three areas which include the front bar for drinking and dining, a ground floor dining area and two dining areas on the first floor. It is proposed to close the first floor which, says the report, is isolated from the main dining area and bar. Access for customer s and staff is via narrow and substandard stairs. The first floor rooms would be available for hire as meeting rooms and private functions.

A heart beat away

Life-saving heart equipment in Long Wittenham’s redundant red telephone box should be in place and operational by the end of April. The Public Access Defibrillator or PAD costing nearly £2,500 will help save the lives of heart attack victims.

The parish council has put in £1,000 towards the cost of buying and installing the equipment .The rest of the money has come from public donations and Crispin and Beth Evans from Fieldside in memory of their son Guy who died four years ago at the age of 17. Guy’s heart stopped suddenly while he was riding his motorcycle and he died before paramedics could reach him.

Mr Evans said the public appeal raised £1,300 and more has been promised.

Extra money would be used to create a maintenance fund and refurbishment of the phone box. The council is to under-write £250 for refurbishment costs. It’s also planned to use the kiosk as a book exchange facility.

Mr Evans said: “We would like to thank everyone for their generous support in helping get this scheme off the ground. Our thanks go to the council and villagers. We have also received money from former residents of Long Wittenham.”

On Friday March 30 Mr and Mrs Evans will host a social evening in the village hall to thank the village for its support. A representative from the Community HeartBeat Trust will give a demonstration on how to use the defibrillator. The machine is programmed to give simple, step-by-step instructions to the user who would not need specialist knowledge. It is planned to hold an official opening of the PAD on June 4 as part of the village’s celebrations to mark the Queen’s diamond jubilee

Celebrating the Diamond Jubilee

Long Wittenham has received the go-ahead for a street party in the High Street as part of the village celebrations on June 4 to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. South Oxfordshire District Council gave its seal of approval for the High Street to be closed from the Vine& Spice to the Plough between 10am and 6pm.

Plans are now being drafted by the Wittenham Jubilee Committee in conjunction with village groups for a range of events to mark the Royal event. The centre piece will be the High Street party between midday and 4pm. Villagers will be able to bring their tables and chairs and fill the road for the Big Picnic. They can bring their own food and refreshments or choose from special menus at the two pubs or the village barbecue.

A pageant covering the six decades of the Queen’s reign is planned. It’s hoped that village groups and children will take part. The idea is for the parade to assemble in the school playground and walk along to the garden of the Plough which will be the hub of a wide range of activities. There will be games for children in the garden followed by a tea party. In addition there will be a tug-of-war, Irish dancing, maypole dancing and stocks in which selected people will volunteer to have wet sponges thrown at them. The day will also be marked by the official opening of the Public Access Defibrillator which is being installed in the redundant telephone box in the High Street to help save the lives of heart attack victims. On the music scene its planned to have buskers moving around the garden and High Street. The Wittenham Singers will give performances and budding stars of the future will get their chance to show off their musical skills before judges at Wittenham’s Got Talent competition. Celebrations at the Plough will be rounded off with karaoke and a disco. The village history group plans to stage an exhibition of life in Long Wittenham from the 1950s to the present. The W.I. is to hold a cake competition in the village hall. The organisers are calling on resident to decorate their homes with flags and buntings and turn out in force for the activities to make the big community get together a huge success.

The next meeting of the organising committee is on Thursday April 5 starting at 7.30pm in the dining room of the Plough. Everyone is welcome.
