Clifton Hampden 20mph Speed Limit Consultation

Oxfordshire County Council (OCC) is asking for residents’ views on the proposal to introduce a 20mph speed limit within Clifton Hampden.

The new speed limit will replace the majority of the existing 30mph speed limit.  The 30mph speed limit on the A415 Abingdon Road at Burcot Park, the 40mph speed limit on the A415 Abingdon Road leading north-eastwards out of the village, and the 50mph speed limit on the B4015 Oxford Road leading northwards out of the village will be retained.

There are full details of the proposal and the opportunity to comment on the OCC Let’s Talk website.

The consultation closes on Friday 11th October 2024.

No it doesn’t need it !!

  2. Alan Brown says:

We have 20 MPH limit in Long Wittenham, very little enforcement so a waste of public money. Volunteers carry out checks in school term times but this does not appear to deter speeders.

  3. Ann Tomline says:

As the one in Long Wittenham isn’t taken seriously by many people passing through and some locals It is yet another waste of money and a further littering of signs .Spend the money filling pot holes . Sadly villages are becoming more like the suburbs of large towns covered with signs and plastic posts. We need to keep our identities as a village.

  4. Bill Symonds says:

Another complete waste of time and taxpayers money. Since when has that stretch of road been dangerous or had a serious accident. Spend the money on repairing the roads . That will make them safer!!!

  5. Jane May says:

Agree 100% with all the above, but if you have strong views you need to reply to the OCC consultation via the link given.

  6. David Haylett says:

Absolutely right, very few drive through Long W at 20mph and the chance of it happening on the A415 is zilch. I read somewhere that the Welsh ‘Government’ has realised its blanket 20mph was a mistake. We are currently in southern France near Nimes & Montpellier, every village and town here has 30kph zones, equivalent to 20mph and everyone ignores them too, in spite of really vicious road humps. Mend the potholes properly and resurface the road from Long W to Clifton!!

  7. Sally Duff says:

A question to all those who have commented:

Do you drive at 20mph through our village?
Do you drive at 20mph in other villages & built up areas when required?

If your answer is yes, then speed regulations are working, it takes time to educate the general public.

    • Caroline Churchill says:

I’ve driven for over 40 years using common sense, conditions and circumstances as a guide, along with speed limits of course. Even before 20mph limits were introduced, I occasionally drove that slowly when circumstances dictated. I do think sometimes that the powers that be forget that the vast majority of drivers are responsible adults and don’t need re educating! And for the minority of irresponsible drivers, they will still drive badly whatever signage there may be.

  8. Jenny Hitchen says:

The public money could be spent better cutting grass verges and keeping gutters and paths clear of vegetation; speed signs are just ignored and a complete waste of public money.
