Sir Martin Wood

Sir Martin Wood, who launched the world’s first scanning technology and founded the environmental group the Earth Trust based at Little Wittenham, has died.  He was ninety-four.

A visionary engineer, Sir Martin started Oxford Instruments with his wife Audrey, developing and marketing the world’s first superconducting magnets.  These were soon in great demand for scientific equipment, notably in the development of MRI scanning technology. Continue reading

Village Poppy Appeal

More than £1,500 was collected in Long and Little Wittenham for the annual Poppy Appeal for the Royal British Legion.

Eight collectors toured the two villages and there were collection boxes in The Plough Inn and The Vine and Spice, the Athletics Club in Bodkin’s Field and the Primary School.  The Parish Council donated £50 to the appeal.

20mph Speed Limit Approved

The Cabinet Member for Highway Management at Oxfordshire County Council (OCC) approved the 20mph speed limit for the village on Thursday 18th November.

Carols by Candlelight

Carols by Candlelight return to the Barley Mow pub garden on Saturday 18th December, starting at 6pm.  There will be early evening carols sung by the Didcot Divas Choir and they will be supported by the Abbey Brass Band from Abingdon.

There will be an entrance fee of £8 for adults and £5 for children, which includes mince pies, chocolate or a glass of mulled wine. Continue reading

Rural Isolation Survey

Community First Oxfordshire (CFO), on behalf of Healthwatch Oxfordshire is undertaking a survey and community engagement exercise to better understand the levels of rural isolation felt in communities in rural Oxfordshire.

The survey is designed for everyone to have their say and is anonymous – you do not need to say who you are.  It will take only a few minutes.

Thames Travel Bus Service

The Thames Travel bus service between Didcot and the Culham Science Centre via Long Wittenham is being discontinued from the end of this Friday (19th November) because of poor passenger numbers and a shortage of almost eighty drivers.

A new service is planned for January with the help of money from the Ladygrove expansion near Didcot.

Pharmaceutical Services Consultation

People who use pharmaceutical services in Oxfordshire are being asked to give their views on whether current services are meeting the needs of the population.

Residents have until 9th January 2022 to comment on Oxfordshire County Council’s new pharmaceutical needs assessment (PNA).  The PNA is a report on all the NHS community pharmacies in the county and also includes those family doctors who are permitted to dispense medicines as a pharmacist would. Free Parking for Christmas Shopping

Annual free parking is provided by South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse District Councils to encourage people to shop locally for their Christmas presents, and is even more important this year following the economic impact of the Coronavirus pandemic.

The free parking days allocated to each area are agreed with the individual town councils depending on which day would best suit local traders.
