Support St Mary’s Through Amazon

The Friends of St Mary’s support the church by helping with maintenance and providing little extras when Parochial Church Council resources are stretched.

They usually raise money for this by running events throughout the year.  However, with the Covid-19 crisis making this difficult, they have been looking for new fund raising opportunities.

Home Library Service

The Oxfordshire Home Library Service is offered in partnership with Age UK to people who are unable to visit the library themselves through frailty, infirmity or a disability and have no other means of getting access to reading materials.  Full-time carers and those who might need the service on a short-term basis following debilitating illness or hospitalisation can apply too.

Westfield Play Area

Pictured below is the new play equipment at the Westfield Road play area.

The Parish Council obtained a grant for nearly half the total cost of just over £12,000 from the FCC Communities Foundation who provide grants on behalf of waste contractors.  The Wittenham Warriors also supported the project.

Poppies In The Post

With Remembrance Day just around the corner and Covid-19 restrictions still in place, the vast array of Royal British Legion volunteers are unable to distribute poppies in large numbers as normal.

Parish Council Contracts

The Parish Council is re-tendering two contracts for the maintenance and general upkeep of the open spaces and churchyard within the village, including grass cutting and hedge trimming on verges, sports and play areas, and also maintenance and minor repairs of fences and outdoor furniture.

The contracts will commence on 1st April 2021 and run for three years with a possible extension of one year. Continue reading

Consultation on Electric Vehicles

South Oxfordshire District Council is working with Oxfordshire County Council (OCC) on a project to install electric vehicle charging points in a range of public car parks in 2021.  As part of that work, the county council has launched a survey gathering data on residents’ opinions on electric vehicles.

The survey will close on 23rd October 2020.

Temporary Footpath Closure – Day’s Lock

The Parish Council has been advised by the Traffic Regulations Team at Oxfordshire County Council that a request has been received from the Environmental Agency for a temporary footpath closure to apply to a section of Thames Path at Day’s Lock whilst essential repair and refurbishment works on the lock gates are carried out.

The temporary closure and will operate from 16th November 2020 and the estimated duration of the works programme is four weeks. Continue reading

New Vicar Licensed

On Wednesday 6th October, a select congregation gathered at Dorchester Abbey for the Licensing Service of Reverend Canon Paul Wignall.

Owing to Covid-19, everyone who attended was required to wear appropriate face coverings, which gave the service a more than usually somber feel.  Although there were some hymns during the service, these were recordings of the Abbey Choir, made at previous services. Continue reading

Make the Thames ‘Safe for All’

South Oxfordshire District Council (SODC) is stepping up its campaign to make the River Thames safe for wildlife and river users by calling for an end to sewage overflows, more public information on water quality and more stringent water testing in the river.

The Thames and its tributaries in Oxfordshire are a haven for wildlife and biodiversity.  They are popular with locals and visitors for paddling, swimming, kayaking and paddle boarding. Continue reading

Didcot Road Re-alignment Avoided

Didcot Road will not have to be re-aligned for a new entrance to the Vanderbilt housing development.  There were fears that had the re-alignment gone ahead it would have caused months of traffic disruption.

Following agreement between the landowner, Vanderbilt and Oxfordshire County Council, the road will not now have to undergo major alterations.  The Parish Council worked behind the scenes with the other parties in helping to find a Continue reading
