Parish Council Meets New District Councillor

At last Thursday’s meeting of the Parish Council, members had their first opportunity to meet the new district councillor for Sandford and the Wittenhams,  Green Party member Sam Casey-Rerhaye.

She outlined her green credentials when she spoke of her opposition to large scale house and road building in South Oxfordshire.  She said new roads led to more congestion and pollution. Continue reading

Fun Run Report

More than one hundred contestants took part in the 11th annual Long Wittenham Fun Run along paths and bridleways in and around the village on Sunday, raising money for the village Pre-school and the appeal to restore the six bells at the 12th century church of St Mary’s.

The winner of the event was Army warrant officer David Branfoot who is based at Didcot.  He ran the 5k route (3.1miles) in 18 minutes and 15 seconds.  In second Continue reading

Fun Run Update

It’s only a few days until the Fun Run this Sunday, starting at The Plough at 11am.  The great news is that the weather forecast looks really good for the weekend.  Remember, it’s a family event so the whole family can take part, and there are trophies for under 8s, under 12s, under 18s, adults and over 50s.

Waste And Recycling Collections

A reminder that because of the Spring Bank Holiday, waste and recycling collections will change this week.

Grey bin and food collections will be a day later than usual on Friday.

Big Picnic Lunch – 30th June

All residents should have received a flyer (see below) for The Wittenhams’ Big Picnic Lunch to be held on Sunday 30th June at Bodkins.  It is being jointly coordinated by the WI and Long Wittenham Athletic Club.

It stems from the Big Lunch idea begun by the Eden Project along with the National Lottery.  Its aim is to help create stronger communities and increase happiness and wellbeing.  Last year over nine million people took part across the UK. Continue reading

Village Hall Committee

The Village Hall Committee held its Annual General Meeting on 22nd May.  Chairman Barrie Henderson, Treasurer Martin Mellor and Bookings Secretary Jill Mellor were re-elected for another term.

Martin and Jill Mellor both announced that next year, they intend to stand down from their posts which they have held for many years.  These are very important roles on the committee and the success of the Village Hall is dependent upon them. Continue reading

Kler Appeal Upheld

Residents will be disappointed to learn that the fight to stop Kler Group from changing the alignment of Didcot Road to facilitate the entrance to its prospective housing site has been lost.

The Parish Council, residents and South Oxfordshire District Council opposed plans by Kler arguing that it would impact on residents living opposite the entrance and harm the rural appearance of the village.

WiddowsonArt Exhibition

Long Wittenham artist Tim Widdowson will be exhibiting his work at the Cornerstone Arts Centre in Didcot in June and July.  The exhibition, entitled WiddowsonArt, is actually a Widdowson family showcase as it will feature not only works by Tim, but also his daughters Liza and Emma.

Tim’s work is well known in the village and through his recently published book Putting Art Into Perspective.  Liza is a specialist in Nuclear Medicine Technology and works at the Continue reading
