Three Little Maids

Sorelle, the all female singing trio, who performed a very successful concert at St Mary’s Church in December 2019, have been booked again for Saturday 4th June 2022 at 7:30pm.

They will be performing Three Little Maids, “a comedy concert of opera and musical theatre favourites”.  To celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee, the programme will include some of Vera Lynn’s best-loved favourites and traditional English songs. Continue reading

Open Letter to Dog Walkers

To those who bag and bin their dog’s poo – thank you.
To those that do not, we send the following request:

Dog fouling is a major concern to many people, not just because of the mess it causes, but because it can be a health risk.  Dogs may deposit roundworm eggs (toxocara canis) in their faeces, which become infectious after about 3 weeks, and can remain so for up to 2 years.  Anyone, but particularly children playing near to the ground, run the risk of picking up and swallowing Continue reading

Graffiti Damage

Thames Valley Police are investigating after graffiti in two-feet high letters was daubed on the end of a terraced house in St John’s Row.  The graffiti read: “Horses are bad!”

The vandals also went on to deface the sign at the entrance to the Three Poplars Park, fencing at the side of the park and the sign outside Acklings playground announcing the start of the bridleway ahead.  The symbol for horses was spray-painted over. Continue reading

Fun Dog Event

As part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, The Friends of St Mary’s will be running a Fun Dog Event in the garden of The Plough Inn on Bank Holiday Friday 3rd June starting at 2:30pm.

As well as Dog Olympics and a range of other doggy classes, teas, coffee and cakes will be available and The Plough garden bar will be open.  All are welcome, with or without dogs.

Parish Council Changes

Gordon Rogers has stepped down as chairman of the Parish Council after five years in the post.  At the council’s meeting on 12th May he also left the council after serving for eleven years.

The new chairman is Steve Brown who has been a councillor since 2014.  He was chairman from 2015 to 2017 and he brings a wealth of experience to the role.

Volunteers Wanted – St Mary’s Church

David Haylett writes …

Currently St Mary’s is locked and unlocked every day by a group of volunteers who take it in turns to carry this out on a daily basis for two weeks.  Visitors comment that they are grateful to find the building open and accessible.  From time to time people also come in to find a quiet space for reflection.

Joint Local Plan Consultation

South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse district councils have come together to work on a new Joint Local Plan.  The Joint Local Plan will guide the kinds of new housing and jobs needed and where they should go, informing planning application decisions for the districts.

While development has been allocated up until 2031 for the Vale and 2035 for South Oxfordshire in the current Local Plans, councils must cover a 15-year period so this new plan will cover the extra years to 2041. Continue reading

Planning Application

The Parish Council has been advised by South Oxfordshire District Council (SODC) of a new planning application within the village.

The application, at French’s Cottage, High Street, Long Wittenham, is for the erection of a garden studio to be used for entertaining and as a home office.
