Claire Brown, on behalf of Wittenham WI, writes …
This year, 1st Wittenham Brownies have made a fantastic display inside the bus shelter with our soldier (made by Mark Warren) taking pride of place outside with the bunting.
Wittenham WI have also decorated the outside of the village hall with bunting and laminated snippets from war time WI meetings and anecdotes and letters collected from members. We hung them up in a washing line format, so that villagers and passerbys can read them: at one meeting … the competition was for the best starched man’s collar … another snippet said that several members volunteered to join the volunteer fire service … and another said that there would be no more teas at meetings because of rationing! Some of the letters are more thought provoking and made us realise how lucky we are these days not to be in a war situation.
We would like to thank all those who contributed with the bunting, anecdotes and help to make this display happen. Oh, and one of our members, made a most delicious VE Day 80 WI Official Orange and Ginger Cake for our May meeting.
