Blandford Fly

A resident writes …

Please advise anyone walking around Wards Field, or by the Thames, to wear shoes and long trousers.  I was bitten on Thursday by a Blandford Fly.  I had never heard of this insect before.  The bite is a bit painful and would be horrible for children.  Its not  dangerous for most people but very unpleasant for several days.  Apparently, it’s a seasonal risk, usually in May or June, and there’s been a rise in incidents in Oxfordshire this year:
