Garden Waste Collections Suspended

South Oxfordshire District Council (SODC) has asked the Parish Council to let residents know that it is suspending garden waste collections.

This is due to the ongoing issues of a shortage of HGV drivers, as a result of the pandemic and Brexit, who are needed to drive its waste collection vehicles.

More details on the SODC website.

What the hell has Brexit got to do with it??

Because now you have to have the equivalent of A-Levels to work here under the points based immigration system which many EU drivers don’t have (even though they have an HGV cat C licence). So there are about 25,000 less HGV drivers than last year.

Plus cross border HGV drivers typically get paid per kilometre so time in ports on extra border checks is unpaid.
