Long Wittenham Past

Another in our occasional series showing images and items of interest from Long Wittenham’s past.

This time, an article from the Oxford Mail dated 13th April 1961 in which it was reported that the Parish Council had agreed to demolish the Fire Engine House next to the village cross.  In fact, as we know, it was not demolished, and a few months later, the council gifted it to the then Wallingford Rural District Council to house electrical equipment controlling the nearby sewage pumping station for the new village sewage system.

This article is taken from Mercy Ward’s scrapbooks which are now in the Long Wittenham History Group archive.  If you have an interest in local history, why not join the history group?  More information on the History Group page.
