School Care Extended

Long Wittenham Primary School has extended its after-hours activities including football coaching sessions with staff from Oxford United.

The school has launched a new child care provision from 3.20pm to 6.30pm provided by Get Active Sports, a private company which operates in schools in Oxfordshire and other parts of the country.

The late afternoon sessions supplement the successful school-run Breakfast Club which has been a feature for the last two years.  There’s a wide range of activities on offer ranging from soccer coaching on Wednesdays, gymnastics and arts and crafts.  Snacks are also provided. The company has its own fully trained staff, independent of the school.

The Breakfast Club operates a service for families who can drop off their children earlier than the start of the school day.  Children are provided with breakfast and have the chance to play games, read or catch up on homework.  Sessions cost £3 per child.

Bookings for the afternoon school club are handled by Get Active.  Families have three options: 3:20pm to 4:30pm – £6 per child including a snack; a 4:30 to 6pm session costing £7.50 with a main snack and there’s a longer 3:20pm to 6pm session which includes a small and a main snack.  This longer session cost £15.95.

Head teacher Alison Bellingham said: “We are thrilled to have secured our after school care.  We can now provide wrap-around care for our children whose parents know their children are being well looked after and entertained in school.”

“Sports as well as the craft activities have proved to be extremely popular and we are already seeing an increase in number of pupils staying on to take part in the club.”

Elizabeth Atherton who chairs the school governors said: “The out of hours clubs are a big asset and a great help to parents.  Although it can cost a lot in a week if your child takes full advantage of all the services on offer, it’s still cheaper than paying for a child minder or a nanny.”
