Kler Public Enquiry Decision

The Parish Council and SODC’s Planning Committee both objected to the proposed  development of housing by Kler Group on the field at the corner of Fieldside and Didcot Road.

Kler appealed and a public enquiry was held in Didcot in November 2017.  After four days of arguments the inspector had the final decision on whether the development would be given consent or not.

Despite all the efforts of the Parish Council and SODC’s barrister the housing development has been given outline consent together with full consent for a new access off Didcot Road.

The Parish Council, our consultants and residents who spoke at the enquiry put forward a Continue reading

Road Safety Signs

Residents may have noticed new road safety signs around the village.  Designed by pupils at Long Wittenham Primary School the signs have been located along village roadsides urging drivers to take extra care and slow down.

Altogether eleven of the colourful signs are in place.  One is outside the entrance to Bodkin’s Field where new play equipment was recently installed and two are in Northfield Lane.  Six are located on the approach to the village along Little Wittenham Road and a further two in West End near the bend close to the Three Poplars mobile homes park.

Parish councillors Steve Brown and Gordon Rogers, helped by Wittenham Warriors Continue reading

Storm Eleanor

The adverse weather resulting from Storm Eleanor has prompted UK Power Networks to advise the following:

Extreme weather can damage overhead power lines resulting in some customers losing their electricity supply.  Where this happens we work to restore power as quickly and safely as possible.  We have organised additional staff in our contact centre to help customers whose electricity supply might be affected by the predicted weather, and we have called-up additional engineers to carry out repairs to overhead lines and poles as soon as the wind reduces to a speed at which it is safe to work.

Anyone experiencing a power cut should: Continue reading

Cycle Path Update

Consultants are still examining routes along the main road between Clifton Hampden and Long Wittenham for a proposed cycle path, potentially costing up to half-a-million-pounds, and hope to have a detailed design and report ready by the Spring.

The plan forms part of a proposed network of cycle paths linking the Vale Science area at Harwell, Milton Park, Didcot and the Culham Science Centre.

WSP consultants are working in conjunction with Oxfordshire County Council.  Both parties are investigating where the best alignment for the cycle path would be alongside the road. Continue reading

Wittenham Clumps Under Threat Says Earth Trust

Wittenham Clumps would be damaged if a new link road to the proposed Oxford-Cambridge expressway is built, says the Earth Trust.  The charity which manages the Clumps, Little Wittenham Wood, surrounding farm land and forestry, says one of the three proposed link roads from the A34 to the expressway would cut across land designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).

The Trust’s Chief Executive Officer Jane Manley has written to Highways England and the National Infrastructure Commission raising concerns about the proposed route of the link road.

She said: “The link road would damage the viability of Earth Trust and the Trust’s ability Continue reading

Community Hub Update

The result of the public enquiry into Kler’s proposed development of the land at the corner of the Didcot Road and Fieldside is expected in mid January.  In the meantime Chris Brotherton and his colleagues at Thomas Homes are making good progress on the planning application to develop the community hub and supporting housing on Mr Weavers’ land off the Didcot Road opposite Saxon’s Heath.

A meeting was held to discuss the current plans with the Planning Department at South Oxfordshire District Council (SODC) on 14th December at which the Parish Council were represented.  Thomas Homes will now respond to the feedback from SODC and hope to have revised plans in place by February/March 2018.  At that stage there will be a further Continue reading
