Clifton Hampden Quarry Update

Oxfordshire County Council’s decision to approve a large increase in the amount of sand and gravel needed to support large scale housing developments over the next 20 years is a set-back to campaigners fighting plans for the huge quarry near Clifton Hampden.  But the fight continues.

The council says more than one-million tonnes of aggregates a year are needed until 2031 to support the need for houses in the county.  In total 22,500 homes are due to be built in South Oxfordshire by 2033.  The plan specifies that 75 per-cent of aggregates should come from quarries in south Oxfordshire.

Registration for Oxfordshire Artweeks 2018

Registration for May Festival 2018 is now open and the closing date for entries is the 31st December 2017.

Don’t miss your chance to take part: Artweeks is non-selective and open to all amateur and professional artists and craft makers living or working in Oxfordshire.  Artweeks is also open to artists that live outside the county but are members of an established Oxfordshire based art group, society or guild.  Artweeks festival is organised by a not for profit members company.

Changes to DIY charging at OCC Recycling Centres

From Sunday 1st October 2017 the charges for the disposal of non-household waste are changing.  The existing DIY 1,2,3 for free scheme, which has been in place for 15 years, is being replaced by a small fixed fee per item.

You will still be able to dispose of all household waste free of charge at any of the county’s Household Waste Recycling Centres.

Countryside Alliance Awards 2017

The Countryside Alliance Awards, also known as the ‘Rural Oscars’, are THE rural business awards to win, and give a voice and platform to the best of the countryside’s produce, enterprise, heritage and communities.

Referendum Result

We are pleased to announce the result of yesterday’s referendum on the Neighbourhood Plan:

Spoilt ballot papers          4
Turnout                            64.75%
Yes                                   418
No                                      30

There are 698 people on the electoral roll, which means that 59.9% of the total electorate voted ‘Yes’.

Clifton Hampden Bridge Closure – Revised Date

The Parish Council has been advised by Oxfordshire County Council that the closure of Clifton Hampden Bridge, originally scheduled for 18th September for ten days, has now been rescheduled for 9th October, again for ten days.

This is for repair work that is required following a road traffic accident last year that demolished a length of brick parapet.

Lunch Club & W.I. Pre-Christmas Outing

Wittenham Lunch Club & Wittenham W.I. invite all villagers to join them on a trip to London on Thursday 30th November 2017 to include: Christmas shopping at the Greenwich covered Christmas Market; a visit to the Royal Greenwich Museum (Queens House/National Maritime Museum are free entry); a late afternoon Christmas Boat Cruise to Westminster via Canary Wharf & lights of the City (centrally heated boat + indoor seats with Blue Badge Guide); and a coach tour of Christmas London at night, finishing for refreshments in Covent Garden.
