Earth Trust Meadow Closure

The permissive footpath through the Earth Trust meadow near Neptune Wood will be closed for approximately six weeks from Monday 7th August.

This meadow supports an abundance of wildflowers and associated wildlife; grazing with sheep and cattle at certain times of year, including late summer, is essential for maintaining the populations of wildflowers.

In the past there has unfortunately been a number of dog attacks on sheep whilst they have been grazing in this field; therefore the footpath will be closed whilst the sheep are grazing here. Continue reading

Long Wittenham’s Pour My Bluff – 11th November 2017

Come along for an evening of wine tasting and general hilarity.  Yes, it’s the long awaited return of Pour My Bluff to Long Wittenham.

Six wines tasted blind;  three ‘experts’ trying to convince you that they know what each wine is – but only one of them will be telling the truth, the other two will be lying through their teeth!  Are your taste buds good enough to identify the wine?!

Compered by Lesley-Anne Doveston, who will be known to many – ably supported by two other wine ‘experts’ from the village.

This event has always sold out in the past – so buy your ticket now to secure your place.  It Continue reading

Neptune Wood Car Park Resurfacing

The Neptune Wood car park is currently closed for resurfacing.  The work started on Monday 31st July and should take approximately two weeks.  Neptune Wood will still be accessible via the footpaths from Long Wittenham, Little Wittenham and the Earth Trust Centre.  If you intend to visit during this time, please do not park in the laybys on Little Wittenham Road as this could obstruct traffic.

Date Fixed for Kler Inquiry

A date has been set for a public inquiry into the Kler Group’s plans for 36 houses on the field at the corner of the Didcot Road and Fieldside.

The inquiry will be heard between the 14th and 17th November at the Didcot Civic Centre in Britwell Road, Didcot.  It’s a formal inquiry and barristers will represent both Kler and South Oxfordshire District Council.  SODC has misgivings about the plans over a number of technical issues.

Long Wittenham Parish Council is opposed to Kler’s plans but parish funds cannot meet the cost of professional legal representation.  The council will however be allowed to speak and cross examine the Kler proposals. Continue reading

Tree Expert Banned In Quarry Row

A world-renowned tree expert has been banned from investigating ancient trees on land threatened by the quarry plan near Clifton Hampden.

Bachport – an alliance of local villages and individuals – has drafted in leading arboriculterist David Lonsdale to study the site but Hills has refused him access.  Mr Lonsdale has identified 40 trees for further investigation.

The presence or absence of veteran or biologically important trees must be considered under national planning policy guidelines.  Hills says it has “not identified any veteran trees”. Continue reading

Playground Campaign Nears Target

More than £6,550 has been raised for new play equipment at Bodkin’s Field in Long Wittenham and the campaign organisers say they hope children will be playing there next spring.

A grant of £7,300 has been secured from South Oxfordshire District Council but one of the conditions is that the campaigners have to match-fund the grant.  Supporters say they are £737 short of their target but are confident of hitting it by the end of the year.

So far £6,554 has been raised including a donation of £2,500 from the parish council.  The Wittfest music festival at The Plough pub raised £1,600 and the village Fun Run £700.  Wittenham Warriors and Safari Supper each gave £500 and a women’s social party £419. Continue reading
