LEADER is a scheme that delivers European funding for rural development using a community-led approach. The LEADER scheme is part of the Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE). It is managed nationally by the Rural Payments Agency (RPA) on behalf of Defra.
Oxfordshire LEADER is one of eighty LEADER areas which deliver the programme.

The Environment Agency are asking for feedback on features of the Oxford Flood Alleviation Scheme design including bridges, footpath furniture i.e. benches, and information boards, as well as asking for information to help with construction plans and getting general feedback on the scheme.
The consultation was originally planned to run in May, but was postponed due to the pre-election period for the General Election. This consultation will run from 22nd June to 20th July 2017.

Long Wittenham Parish Council has laid out its opposition to plans for 36 homes on land off Fieldside known locally as Challis farm. Kler – the company behind the plans – has appealed against South Oxfordshire District Council’s delay in making a decision and there will be a public inquiry later this year.
The parish council has consistently objected to the proposals and says that the appeal should be refused and one of the main reasons is that the Kler development conflicts with the council’s Neighbourhood Development Plan or NDP. This plan involves building a new school, pre-school, village hall and about 40 homes on land off Didcot Road. The NDP will be put to a village referendum probably on 7th September.

Biffa, the company that collects waste and recycling in Long Wittenham has launched a new bin washing service. Residents can pay a monthly fee to have their bins – refuse, recycling, green and food – washed on a regular basis.
Customers of Biffa Wheelie Clean have the option of having their bins washed every 4, 8 or 12 weeks. The choice is yours! The company is currently putting bin hangers on bins in their districts to advertise the service.

This is the 18th Year of the Wittfest three day Music Festival at The Plough. The event, as usual, will be free. There will be lots of great local bands playing a varied selection of musical genres. This year instead of raising money for local charities the event is fundraising for much needed new play equipment for the children’s playground at Bodkins. There are some amazing raffle prizes, including four tickets to see Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers in London in July. As usual, the daytime will be a family oriented with Peppa Pig and Spiderman, face painting, bouncy castle and lots more. Thursday 7th September 2017 is the likely date when villagers in Long Wittenham will vote in a referendum on the parish council’s Neighbourhood Plan (NP).
South Oxfordshire District Council still has to consider and accept the independent examiner’s report and recommendations before the plan goes before the public but it’s not expected to be an obstacle. If the NP wins public backing it a will allow the community to take responsibility for guiding housing development in the area.

As part of the activities to raise funds for the purchase of new play equipment at Bodkin’s Field, the Wittenham Warriors invite all fun seeking ladies in the village to Elm Close House on Friday 7th July from 7pm to 10pm for a “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” evening.
