Council pegs spending

The parish council is playing its part in helping drive down costs in the straitened financial climate gripping every walk of life. The council has decided to freeze its spending for the new financial year starting in April. Councillors have agreed to set the precept at £16,153 the same figure as the current year. It works out at less than £50 per household per year.

Council chairman Tom Bowtell said: “These are difficult financial times for councils, businesses and families and we decided to play our small part in helping to ease the pressure by holding down our spending.”

Footpath to Clifton Hampden

The campaign for a footpath linking the two villages continues but the prospect of a new path along the main road looks increasingly unlikely.

With county council cash at a premium and the need to secure agreement with landowners this expensive option has faded leaving a cheaper and more realistic proposal – a link to the Thames Path towards Clifton via the weir. The council is to pursue inquiries with landowners and the Environment Agency about rights of way at the side of fields and over the weir.

Vine Parking

The Vine and Spice pub and restaurant in the High Street has agreed to contribute towards the cost of landscaping the grass area in front of the car park. Following a request from the council the V&S says it’s prepared to landscape the area with shrubs and stones to prevent vehicles parking on the land. Wittenham Vision is carrying out planting scheme throughout the village and will be asked if it can include the pub area in its scheme.

New speed sign

The council is to contribute more than £2,000 towards the cost of a solar-powered flashing 30mph sign known as a VAS or Vehicle Activated Sign. The sign will be positioned at the entrance to the village from the direction of Clifton Hampden. The total cost of the sign and installation is nearly £5,400. The parish council will pay £2,250 and the balance will come from county council funds. Residents living close to the bend have expressed concerns about the speed of some vehicles entering the village and the risk they pose to pedestrians and properties.

Losing the battle

It’s looking increasingly unlikely that Long Wittenham will stem the tide of Didcot’s expansion. A final decision on the proposed growth of Ladygrove towards the fringes of the village with 2,000 homes is expected from South Oxfordshire District Council in May.

At public hearings before an Inspector last year Wittenham and ten neighbouring villages spoke out against the expansion, fearing increased traffic on country roads. Recent surveys show volumes are already nearing capacity during peak morning and evening travel times at Clifton Hampden bridge and the traffic lights at Abingdon road.

No new river crossing or other major road improvements are planned. The district council claims that new residents would use the A34 to Oxford to avoid known congestion blackspots such as Clifton Hampden bridge.

Wittenham parish council chairman Tom Bowtell said: “Sadly it looks likely that we will lose the battle to stop the Ladygrove expansion. It will lead to even more traffic on already busy roads through villages. Our thanks go to former parish councillor Mat Clifton who worked so hard presenting our case at the public hearings into the district council’s core development strategy for the whole district.”

A big THANK YOU!

Thanks to everyone who turned out last weekend to help at the Wittenham Vision village bulb planting event. About 30 people planted 2000 snowdrops and 3000 daffodils and 100 Fritillaries through the village. Thanks go to the Parish Council, History Group, PCC and WI for their financial support.

Starting at 10, we had almost finished by the scheduled coffee break at 11.30 – an amazing effort! I would also like to thank Annie Eccles Pat Lay and Emma Newman who kindly donated cakes, which were appreciated with our coffee! Thanks also to Cath and Ian Nicholson for hosting our tea/coffee/cake and bacon butty break.

It was a great team effort and a lot of fun. Keep an eye open for future working parties as more Wittenham Vision projects go live.

Village Hall

The search for a new village hall site has taken another step forward. The Village Hall Action Group comprising the parish council, village hall committee and the school has agreed to pay £6,500 to a London-based architects practice to carry out a feasibility study into the five sites proposed for a new hall and school.

After reviewing five quotes the group felt that Zerozero, a small practice based in London, had more experience in community projects and offered best value. It proposes to carry out the study in February and March and hopes to have a report and plans ready for the annual parish meeting on May 9.

The five sites being investigated are: Bodkins Field, Ward’s Field at the back of the museum, land at Challis Farm off Didcot Road, another piece of land further along Didcot Road and a site off Fieldside.

The parish council will contribute £4,000 towards the cost of the study.

The school has put in £1,500 the village hall committee £1,000.

The purpose of the study is to establish the suitability of the five sites and develop a preliminary sketch design. This will enable potential construction costs and residual land values to be assessed and further understand any funding requirements that may be necessary. In addition the existing village hall and school sites have been identified for market housing which would cross subsidise the cost associated with the school and community facilities.

The existing school is nearing capacity and a new school linked to a new village hall would, says the action group “create an efficient and effective solution” to satisfy all the needs of the village.

Time on Your Hands? Want To Get Involved?

Do you have some time to spare to help others? Does the idea of giving an hour or two each week to help those less fortunate sound appealing?

Do you have skills and experience that could help a local organisation?

If you can answer yes to any of the above questions then visit the `VOLUNTEERS DAY` event at Didcot Civic Hall on Saturday 10th March between 10am and 3pm.

Arranged by Didcot Rotary Club and Didcot First, the day is for the benefit of all Charitable Organisations in the Didcot Area.

The organisers are appealing for anyone who feels they ‘want to get involved’ to come and see what is on offer.

Members of Didcot Rotary Club are convinced that many people have the ability, time and skills to `make a difference` in their local community but just need information about the various charities that need help.

Didcot Town Mayor Phil Haywood said “I think this is a fabulous idea focussing on what the organisations are doing and their needs” a view shared by local MP Ed Vaizey who said “”I have always been hugely impressed by the amount of volunteering that goes on in the constituency. It really makes a great difference to people’s lives, whether it’s giving people lifts, helping at advice centres, or running clubs and societies. We couldn’t function as a society without volunteers, so I hope people will see this Fair as a great opportunity to use their skills or time to help the community”

Charitable Groups are encouraged to contact Colin Campbell on 01235 819597 or email: Colin@campbellandco.co.uk to book a table or for further information
