More than one hundred people attended the Village Produce Show last Saturday (11th September) at St Mary’s Church. The vicar, the Revd. Paul Wignall, welcomed villagers and said: “It’s good to see so many people back again after a long spell away because of the pandemic. We look forward to seeing you again at future church events”.
The show stimulated both children and adults to get their green fingers moving again, producing vegetables, fruit, flowers, preserves and cakes.
Around sixty people entered the event. The overall section winners were, Up to Age 7:- Baking: Ava Wise, Vegetables: Thea Harrison; Age 8 to 15:- Baking: Ellen Nickless, Vegetables: Isabel, Flowers: Cressida; Adults:- Fruit: Peter Surridge, Vegetables: Stuart Brown, Baking: Anna Gray, Preserves: Sally Jarman, Flowers: Susie Kutas. A special June Woodage Challenge Flowers Cup for the winner of the Flowers Section was awarded to Susie Kutas.
The event was rounded off by the auction of a crayon-drawing of the interior of the church donated by Maggie Rogers to raise funds. The drawing went to Mandy Matthews of Cherry Tree Cottage in the High Street, who bid £100. The drawing was by a late resident of Long Wittenham, Daphne Stewart, who lived in Fieldside.
The show was organised by the Friends of St Mary’s Church, the village charity which raises funds to help maintain and improve the 12th century grade 1 listed building, for present and future generations to enjoy.
