Virtual Parish Council Meetings

Residents will be aware that the Parish Council cancelled this month’s meeting owing to the current Covid situation.  At the start of the pandemic, the Government passed legislation to allow councils to meet remotely.  That legislation expired in May last year and since then, councils have been required by law to meet face-to-face.

Road Closure Disruption

The Parish Council has complained to Oxfordshire County Council (OCC) about what it believes to be the illegal closure of the road outside Lower Farm.  The road was closed on Friday by Thames Water to replace a fire hydrant.

Parish councillor Steve Brown, a retired civil engineer, has written to OCC’s traffic manager, Keith Stenning, seeking an explanation for what he claims is the illegal closure of the road between the village and Clifton Hampton bridge. Continue reading

January Parish Council Meeting

Owing to the current Covid situation, the Parish Council has decided to cancel its meeting scheduled for 13th January.

If residents have any issues they wish to bring to the attention of the council, please contact the Parish Clerk at longwittpc@hotmail.co.uk.

Didcot Road 10th January

The Parish Council has been advised that roadworks to install the new zebra crossing and traffic calming measure on Didcot Road for the Vanderbilt housing development, will commence on Monday 10th January.  Vanderbilt will also be doing some other ancillary work on the road.

Two way traffic signals will be in place so delays are likely.  The work is expected to take approximately three weeks. Continue reading

Local Transport and Connectivity Plan Consultation

Oxfordshire County Council (OCC) is currently working to produce a new local transport plan.  The plan is its long-term county-wide transport strategy.  It is called the Local Transport and Connectivity Plan (LTCP), to better reflect its strategy both for digital infrastructure and for connecting the whole county.

Christmas Tree Recycling

As in earlier years, South Oxfordshire District Council (SODC) has arranged for Christmas trees to be collected from the grass verge next to the entrance to Bodkin’s Recreation Ground.  Leave trees there by 14th January – they will be collected on Saturday 15th January.

Please do not leave trees inside the gate as they will not be collected.

The Plough Inn Closure

Covid related issues and trading problems have combined to force the closure of The Plough Inn for January and February.  The pub is planning to re-open in March.

Trade in the pub and restaurant trade has been hit severely during the Covid-19 pandemic.  Businesses have suffered alarming drops in trade and an estimated five hundred pubs throughout the country have closed their doors.

The Chairman of the Parish Council Writes …

Greetings and best wishes for 2022 to the residents of Long Wittenham from the chairman of the Parish Council.

Oxfordshire Tops Recycling Table

For the eighth year in a row, Oxfordshire has topped the table nationally when it comes to recycling, reusing, and composting.

Oxfordshire County Council (OCC) has been named the best performing county council waste disposal authority in England.  According to government figures, in 2020-21, residents recycled, reused, or composted 59.5% of their household waste, an increase on the previous year’s figure of 58.8%.
