Government Planning Consultations

Last week the Government launched two consultations on plans to overhaul the planning system and reform the way development is given the go ahead.

The Government’s proposals entitled “Planning for the Future” are aimed at streamlining processes, achieving earlier community engagement and providing more transparency for residents through increasing the use of technology.

The proposals include introducing a thirty per cent discount through the First Homes initiative, scrapping developer contributions through Section 106 and introducing a new National Infrastructure Levy, with local decision making on infrastructure spending.

They also include proposals for change to Local Plans that could see the development of design guidance and codes, which will be binding on development decisions.  The Government is also hoping to strengthen planning enforcement and sanctions through a rule-based system.

To find out more about the proposals and to have your say visit the Government’s Planning for the Future webpage.  The consultation closes on 29th October 2020.

The Government is also asking people to give their views on proposed changes to the current planning system, including changes to the standard method for assessing local housing need.  To find out more and to submit your comments visit the Government’s consultation webpage.  This consultation closes on 1st October 2020.
