Parish Council Opposes New Homes Plan

Plans for up to 29 houses on land off Northfield Lane next to Bodkin’s Field in Long Wittenham have received a frosty reception from parish councillors.

Lagan Homes of Banbury have an option to buy the land and want to build a selection of three and four-bedroom homes.  Architects West Waddy want to stage a public exhibition in the village in January or February and hope to submit a planning application to South Oxfordshire District Council in the Spring.

Move Proposed for Clifton Hampden Surgery

Clifton Hampden surgery, used by many people in Long Wittenham, looks set to be moved to a new Culham Science Village within the next few years.

The Oxfordshire Clinical Commissioning Group (OCCG) is drawing up draft plans for GP practices, hospitals and health providers as it identifies priorities and outline ways to make services “more sustainable and responsive to patients’ needs.”

A report says that health care services are under significant pressures as the population grows and there are more elderly people needing care.  By 2026 the OCCG forecasts the county will be short of 109 GPs and recruitment is unlikely to meet demand. Continue reading →

Quarry Application Refused

Yesterday afternoon Oxfordshire County Council’s Planning Committee voted against the proposals from Hills Quarry Products for a quarry on land at Clifton Hampden.  The committee voted by 11 votes to reject the application.  There were no votes in favour, with only one councillor abstaining.

Hills will almost certainly appeal the decision. The company has a board meeting later this week and will make a decision then.  If the company appeals then it will go to a pubic enquiry next year.

Our county councillor Lynda Atkins spoke against the plan and raised the concerns of Long Wittenham residents

St Nicholas Food Fayre – 9th December

A reminder that St Nicholas himself will be opening the Friends of St Mary’s Christmas Food Fayre at St Mary’s Church at noon on Saturday 9th December.

Come along to buy from a great selection of tasty delights e.g. cakes, puddings, mince pies, biscuits, chutneys and much more.  There will also be the chance to buy spring bulbs potted up ready to flower, candles, decorations, cards, gift wrap and more.  Most of the produce will have been made by people from the village.

Children will find lots of things to do, including a St Nicholas Lucky dip, and the grown ups won’t miss out as they can treat themselves on the Christmas present tombola! Continue reading →

Bachport Needs Your Support

The planning application for the quarry near Clifton Hampden is set to go to the Oxfordshire County Council Planning Committee, which meets on Monday 27th November at 2pm at County Hall, New Road, Oxford OX1 1ND.

Bachport (Burcot & Clifton Hampden for the Protection of the River Thames) is asking for its supporters to attend this meeting.  This will show community opposition to a planning application that has raised serious concerns on multiple levels, not least by the Council’s Highways Authority, which has said the quarry would cause “severe harm” to road safety, threatens air quality and risks plans for a much needed new road link and river crossing between Didcot and Culham. Kler Enquiry Report

The four-day public enquiry into plans by the Kler Group to build 36 houses on the field at the corner of the Didcot Road and Fieldside ended at lunchtime on Friday 17th November following a morning site visit and tour of the village by the inspector heading the enquiry, Phillip Lewis.  His report and conclusion is expected early in the New Year.

Mr Lewis was accompanied on his visit to the site of the former Challis Farm land by members of the Kler team, South Oxfordshire District Council’s planning representatives and members of Long Wittenham Parish Council.

New Community Lottery for South Oxfordshire

A new online community lottery to raise cash for good causes is to be set up early next year by South Oxfordshire District Council.

It will give residents the chance to enter a £1 weekly online draw with the chance of winning prizes ranging from free prize draw tickets to a £25,000 jackpot.  Each ticket bought has a 1 in 56 chance of winning a prize.  From each £1 ticket bought, nearly 60p will go to local good causes.

Eligible community groups and charities will be able to apply to become beneficiaries. Players will be able to choose which cause they support, or opt to pay into a general fund which will be allocated by the council to local good causes. Continue reading →
