Some Enchanted Evening
Less than three weeks to go to the Sorelle concert at St Mary’s Church on Saturday 7th December. Some Enchanted Evening promises to be a magical event celebrating the witches, fairies and enchantresses of opera and musical theatre, and, as well as an evening of delightful music, there will also be a table of homemade Christmas food and gifts for members of the audience to purchase.
The concert has been organised by The Friends of St Mary’s with profits going towards projects to help provide those ‘extras’ for the church where PCC funds are limited. Continue reading
VE Day 75th Anniversary
SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, has contacted the Parish Council asking if Long Wittenham would like to participate in the celebration and commemoration of the 75th anniversary of VE Day which will take place over the weekend of 8th to 10th May next year.

Extra Garden Waste Collection
Residents who are signed up for brown bin collections will be able to put out twice as much garden waste on Thursday 21st November.
South Oxfordshire District Council (SODC) is giving those who are part of the paid-for service the opportunity to put out the equivalent of one extra bin’s worth of garden waste (around three large bin bags).
Residents should leave their extra garden waste out in bin liners or sacks beside their brown bins on their usual collection day. Trade waste bags will not be accepted. Continue reading
Village Meeting
The Parish Council has invited Vanderbilt Homes to a village meeting to discuss its plans for the housing development on the corner of Fieldside and Didcot Road.
It will take place in the village hall on Tuesday 19th November starting at 7:30pm. It is a public meeting and all are invited to attend.

Village Honours The Dead
More than one hundred and forty villagers, school children and teachers gathered at the First World War Memorial yesterday to honour the soldiers who were killed or died from injuries in the conflict.
Long Wittenham honoured those who sacrificed their lives in the First World War – fourteen from Long Wittenham and one, Charles Green aged twenty, who lived in Little Wittenham. Continue reading
Bonfire Night Profit
Despite high winds and rain at the 11th annual Village Bonfire Night, which led to fewer ticket sales than in previous years, the event raised a good profit of £840, which will be distributed as usual to village groups and charities.
At the November meeting of the Parish Council the following donations were agreed: £240 to the Primary School Parent Teachers Association to help towards repairs of the school’s Monkey Bars; £200 to the Brownies and £100 each to Continue reading
New Footpath Warden
The village has a new footpath warden. He is David Corney who has lived in Long Wittenham for eleven years. David grew up in Oxford but says he feels at home in the Long Wittenham area. Until two years ago he was the Director of the Scientific Computing Department at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory.

Green Light for New River Crossing
The Parish Council has welcomed the decision by Oxfordshire County Council to sign up to a deal worth £218m for new road proposals including a river crossing linking Didcot and the Culham Science Centre. The roads will help the Didcot area cope with new housing in the district.

Housing Plans Open For Comment
South Oxfordshire District Council (SODC) has now appointed a case officer for the Vanderbilt Homes ‘reserved matters’ planning application for the housing development on the corner of Fieldside and Didcot Road. It is now possible to comment on the plans and residents are encouraged to do so.
