Tea and birds of prey were on the “menu” at the third birthday party of Long Wittenham’s Good Neighbours club held at the Mill View Garden Centre in Wheatley on 4th May.
More than 20 members of the club – supported by the parish council – had tea in the garden centre and afterwards visited the Birds of Prey aviaries next door. The owner and falconer Clive Jones talked about the world of raptors and there was a flying demonstration from a peregrine falcon, one of the fastest species. Continue reading
Work on phase one of the new-look clubhouse for the Long Wittenham Athletics Club in Bodkin’s Field continues to take shape and now planning begins for part-two.
The club secured a grant of £3,000 from South Oxfordshire District Council and a further £2,500 came from the parish council. One of the conditions of the district council’s grant was that the club had to match the grant with its own money.
The grants were used to replace electric wiring and fittings throughout the club. New windows, doors and plastic, shiplap style cladding for the exterior of the building are being fitted. Fascias and guttering have also been replaced. The work is being carried out by Continue reading

Residents are invited to an exhibition of the exciting designs for the proposed Community Hub by our developer Thomas Homes.
The Parish Council wants to know your thoughts on the designs, so drop in any time between 7:30pm and 9pm on Thursday 11th May at The Plough, have a free glass of wine and some nibbles and tell us what you think.
Last week, Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) for Thames Valley Anthony Stansfeld launched a new website to support victims of crime. Victims First is a new online resource for victims of crime which has advice on what to do and how to get help. It includes information and advice for victims including signposting them to services to help them cope and recover from the impact of the crime. It also includes a section on the Victims Code explaining clearly what help victims can expect from the police and other criminal justice agencies if they report the crime.
The focal point of the website is a directory which allows victims to find relevant support in their area. Members of the public will be able to use the website to refer themselves directly to the PCCs own support services or find information and contact details for other organisations. Residents will be aware of the Village Map, a copy of which is on the noticeboard outside the village hall. The map was originally produced in 2012. There have been some changes in the intervening five years, and as this is such a valuable resource, the parish council intends to get the map updated. A number of amendments have already been identified, but if you know of changes in the village which should be reflected on the map please contact martin.elliff@mail.com with the details. Long Wittenham Parish Council needs to recruit new members to help create a vibrant future for the village.
The new chairman of the council Gordon Rogers said: “This is a very important year for Long Wittenham as it embarks on exciting plans which will shape the village for many years to come. We want people to become engaged. At public consultation meetings many people have shown enthusiasm for what the council is proposing to move the village forward, but we need people to play a role in helping us.”

Gardeners will be delighted to hear that South Oxfordshire District Council in conjunction with the Vale of the White Horse District Council and Biffa are giving away locally produced compost on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th May. Recycling goodies and discounted Compost Bins will also be available.

The Long Wittenham Good Neighbours Club will mark its third birthday with a day trip to the Mill View Garden Centre near Wheatley on 4th May. Members will have tea, cream scones and homemade cake and there will be the chance to watch a flying display of birds of prey at the nearby Falconry Centre. Teas cost £5 each and there’s a donation of £2 for members who attend the birds display.
Club chairman Steve Brown says he would like to know by 30th April from people who want to go to the garden centre as he has to book numbers. The owners are baking especially for the visit. He said he had already got some volunteer drivers for those wanting to share lifts and travel together. Steve’s number is 01865 407589.
