Invitation to Community Orchard Opening Ceremony

The Wittenhams Community Orchard will be opened by Sarah Taylor, High Sherriff of Oxfordshire on Thursday 23rd March at 2pm.

An open invitation is extended to everyone in the local community.  Cropsharers, funders and our supporters have been invited.  All children from Long Wittenham Primary School will be present and hopefully many parents too.

Having conducted the opening Mrs Taylor wants to meet those involved in its creation, planting and support, and to learn more about what the orchard means to local people. Continue reading

The Bells Will Ring Out

St Mary’s Churchwarden writes ….

You will, I hope, have seen the notices around the village and in The Bridge about the service pattern in the Parish changing slightly.  As a bonus consequence of this our wonderful bell ringers will be able to join us at the start of some of our services, starting tomorrow, Sunday 12th March.

As a reminder, the service pattern is now:

1st Sunday – St Mary’s – Family service starting with Parish Breakfast and Crafts at 9.15am, and the service starting at about 9.30am
2nd Sunday – St Mary’s – Parish Communion – 9.30am
3rd Sunday – St Peter’s – Book of Common Prayer Communion – 8.30am

Sawmill Plan For Wood Centre

Plans for the expansion of the Sylva Foundation Centre in Long Wittenham have been lodged with South Oxfordshire District Council.

The Foundation wants to change the use of land and pigsty area from agricultural to forestry use.  Other proposals include the demolition of barns and replacement with a building  for storing  forestry equipment and a mobile sawmill.

There will be room for parking along with an improved access from Little Wittenham Road.  It’s proposed to erect bunds to protect trees and screening to reduce noise from the sawmill.

Oxford Flood Alleviation Scheme

The Environment Agency is working with a range of local partners including the county and district councils to reduce flood risk in Oxford. This partnership was formed in 2014, after the city had been affected by flooding for many years.  The scheme has been developed using evidence about past floods and modelling and exploring various options to come up with the best solution to reduce the impact of flooding in Oxford.

The Oxford Flood Alleviation Scheme Project Team will be visiting locations within the scheme area and in communities downstream of Oxford over the coming months, to explain the scheme and to answer questions.  They will be at Wallingford library on 11th March, Abingdon Community Free Space on 1st April and Sutton Courtenay Village Hall Continue reading

Long Wittenham Fun Run and Walk 2017

This year’s 5k fun run and walk will take place on Sunday 7th May, starting at 11am from The Plough.

It’s a fun day out for all the family and features:-

Playground Improvement Project

Would you like to see the playground facilities for the children of the village improved?  A small team of parents and others are planning to upgrade and enhance the equipment on the Bodkins Playground.  Long Wittenham Parish Council will contribute to the cost and grants are available from other bodies such as South Oxfordshire District Council but these will not fund the whole project.  The team will be holding a meeting in the restaurant room at The Plough at 8pm on Wednesday 15th March to discuss fundraising ideas.  All ideas and support are welcomed.

Annual Parish Assembly – Thursday 16th March

The Annual Parish Assembly will take place on Thursday 16th March at 7:30pm in the Village Hall.  This is an opportunity for residents to hear from the Chairman of the Parish Council, District & County Councillors, community groups and other organisations in the village about their achievements over the past year and plans for the next twelve months.

Although our councillors will be there this meeting is really about what is going on in the village and is your opportunity to tell everyone what your club or group has been up to and is planning.

Neighbourhood Plan Update

The second consultation period for the Neighbourhood Plan ended on 16th February 2017 and following minor amendments, the final Plan has been submitted to South Oxfordshire District Council for them to to begin their public consultation which is expected to last for 6 weeks.

Following their public consultation the documents will be sent to a government inspector and then be presented to the village for referendum.
