Three village events have become casualties in the drive to slow down the spread of Coronavirus.
The Annual Parish Assembly at which village groups and organisations present reports was cancelled yesterday (12th March). The Good Neighbours Group meeting on the same day was postponed. The Lunch Club called off the March meeting and all future lunches until further notice.
The Chairman of the Parish Council Gordon Rogers said: “Reluctantly the council decided to cancel the Assembly because of fast-moving developments in the drive to stop the spread of the virus. It has had serious impacts on the health of nations throughout the world and we must take steps to halt its rise in the population.”
The Lunch Club celebrated its 22nd birthday in February and is a popular event in the village. It attracts more than thirty members to its monthly gatherings. Many of its members are elderly and it’s this group along with people suffering from pre-existing health issues who are most at risk from the virus.
The chief organiser June Woodage said: “Due to the virus and the age group of members we have made a decision to cancel the lunch for March and the foreseeable future. We will notify members when we will start again.”
The Good Neighbours Group which also attracts an elderly audience called off its March meeting and one scheduled in April. Organiser Steve Brown said: “The government is moving to the next level of risk and we need to heed advice and act in a responsible fashion. I received many emails from members saying they would not be attending and so attendances would be low.”
