School Governors Needed

Are you interested in supporting your local primary school?  Long Wittenham School is looking for three new governors.

Governors are responsible for school planning and finance; they help to appoint staff and to build good relations between the school, parents and the local community.  Community Governors bring a broad range of skills to the governing body and each individual brings their own area of interest to the role.  Foundation Governors have a special role in, and responsibility for, ensuring that the Christian character of the school is secured, preserved and developed.

Don’t Bin Your Batteries

Residents in South Oxfordshire are being urged by the District Council not to put batteries or other items which could cause a fire in their waste or recycling wheelie bin.

Recently two small fires started in rubbish while it was being transported in waste and recycling trucks.  Both were potentially very dangerous incidents to the crews, other road users and pedestrians.  They also caused delays to collections and could have resulted in significant damage.

The fires were caused by items residents had put in their bins, most likely to have been standard lithium-ion batteries – like the ones found in most mobile phones. Continue reading

New Parliamentary Constituency Proposals

The Boundary Commission has published proposals to reduce the number of MPs in Parliament.  If the proposals go ahead voters in Long and Little Wittenham could be casting their ballot in a new parliamentary constituency at the next general election due in five years’ time.

Under the plan, voters in the Wittenhams would move out of the Wantage Constituency held by Conservative Ed Vaizey into a newly created East Oxfordshire Constituency which is  largely the current Henley seat held by John Howell for the Conservatives.

Both MPs command large majorities so politically the switch for Wittenham voters to a Continue reading

Apple Day Success

Thanks to a bumper harvest of apples, Village Apple Day last Saturday was a great success, producing a huge number of bottles of delicious juice.

It was a wonderful if somewhat windy day, and lots of villagers turned up with boxes and buckets of apples and a first class team of volunteers weighed, checked, chopped, pressed and bottled.  The juice was pasteurised to give it a shelf life of at least one year.

If you would like to taste this delicious, sweet, totally natural local juice it is available at £3 per bottle.  All profits will go back into the Apple Day fund to purchase more equipment in Continue reading

South Oxfordshire District Council has funded half the cost, the parish council contributed £2,500, and the rest has come from fund raising events in the village this year.  Nearly £700 is outstanding but this is expected to be covered by profits from the village bonfire night in Ward’s Field on 4th November.

Children can play on the playground immediately but the official opening is scheduled for Continue reading
